Moorish Surnames

To this day, we have people (mostly Spanish/Latin in origin) with Moor-related surnames, and even first names.

A few surnames that come to mind are in three categories:

Religious: Medina
Arabic Al=the: Alvarado, Alhambra, Alvarez
Arabic Z: Zambrano

There were at least three (3) sets of Moors

There were at least three (3) sets of Muslim/Moslem Moors: the Arabic Moors, Black or African Moors (hence the term, "blackamoor," or Black as a Moor) and even White Moors.

The Moors conquered Spain about 700 A.D. and stayed there for over 700 years. We will talk about, in this blog, how Moorish culture affected the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) and all their colonies and colonists.
